Where the laundry never turned white
Osterfeld colliery – Gute Hoffnungs Hütte in the late 1950s.
The Osterfeld colliery was a hard coal mine in Oberhausen-Osterfeld. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was one of the largest and most efficient collieries in the Ruhr area and was located in the Oberhausen field of Gutehoffnungshütte (GHH). The colliery was in operation from 1879 to 1992, the beginnings go back to the middle of the 19th century. The roots of the Gutehoffnungshütte go back to the St. Antony Hütte founded in 1758. It made Oberhausen the cradle of iron and steel production in the Ruhr area. A little later, the “Gute Hoffnung” hut was built in the neighborhood, which would soon give the growing group its name.
The motif impressively illustrates how the landscape on the Ruhr has changed since the early 19th century. From agricultural use to a contiguous industrial area, the Ruhrpott from Duisburg to Dortmund.
As with almost all of my illustrations, I work from the background to the foreground.
